LESSON 2 FIELD DATA:

Depth Profiles of Boeri Lake in Excel Format (from Hydrolab probe)
Boeri Lake video footage (800K Quicktime format)

Boeri Lake sits in a volcanic crater at an altitude of 2900 Ft. Eleven students from Saucon Valley School District, their teacher Lance Leonhardt and Wildlands Conservancy's Chris Kocher, hiked to the lake with a raft, Hydrolab Probe, laptop computer and other scientific equipment to measure the lakes physical, chemical and biological characteristics. The Hydrolab probe was successfully lowered from the raft at 1-meter increments to a depth of 37.7 meters, despite the presence of strong wind. (see data collected Lesson 2 - comparison )

LESSON 3 FIELD DATA:

Springfield Stream Data in Excel Format (from Hydrolab probe)
Video of Middleham Falls (1MB Quicktime 4 format)
Video of Data Collection (1.6MB Quicktime 4 format)
Images of stream organisms

Dominica is said to have nearly 365 streams, most of which have a high gradient and raging currents tumbling down the island's steep volcanic slopes. The students of Saucon Valley High School set out to collect stream data from several tropical rain forest streams on their way to the 275 foot Middleham Falls.

Water quality data was also collected from the Springfield stream in Dominica, using the Hydrolab probe over a 23 hour period. This data is being compared to data collected with the probe from Saucon Creek prior to the Dominca trip.

LESSON 4 :

Indian River Video

Tuesday students from Saucon Valley High School took a boat ride up the Indian River which is lined by the majestic fresh water mangrove (Pterocarpus offinalis). They also visited Dominica's largest wet land located on the Cabrits Peninsula.

LESSON 6 FIELD DATA:

Whale watching footage from Jan 19
Whale watching footage from Jan 20

Saucon Valley students spent 2 days whale watching in the local waters off Dominica. In all 5 species of cetaceans were sited. They include the majestic sperm whale, the small and agile dwarf sperm whale, the elusive Frasier dolphin, the rare Bryde's whale, short finned pilot whale and the nimble Atlantic spotted dolphin.
